Would you rather fly first class on an established airline carrier or in an upstart private jet?
Julie F asked:
You have the option to fly first class/business class on an established carrier (Delta, Continental, American Airlines, etc) or to fly on a private jet from an upstart company for approximately the same price. Which would you prefer and why?

First Class/Business because i just feel more comfortable with an established airline. You hear way to many stories about private plane crashes, and that makes me nervous. I know there’s a risk with commercial airlines too, but isn’t there always a risk when flying?

I have only flown privately one time, in a little 10 seater Sesna.
I would go that route every time!
Here’s why:
1. the plane leaves when you want it to
2. no security to go through
3. they fly about 50,000 feet, so almost no turbulence
4. the seats are much more comfortable, and mine swiveled 360 degrees.
5. the service & food are much better and more personable.
First class cabins on mainstream carriers these days are nothing fancy, and many times about the same as what you used to get in coach 15 years ago. You get a bit more leg room, free booze, get to board first, and slightly better food. At 3 times the price, it’s not usually worth it except on long flights.

I’ll go with the tried and true rather than the upstart. With million of passengers on the major airlines, the safety standards will be far superior to those of a newer company.

First class… jets tends to be smaller planes which for me are more riskier

If i really had to I would go with the new upstart one cos they are desperate for your business and are willing to please you. They may even offer you better deals in the hopes that you tell other potential customers.

I would go with the lowest fair. All aircraft are regulated for maintenance, however, none are regulated for price. (They all price-fix across the board)
The new airline may have better service, or more comfortable seating — Or they could be using worn-out 737’s that came from a leasing company. It’s a toss of the coin. Stick with the lowest fair, or the point-to-point destination, no matter what the airline.

The former. The assurance of having a qualified pilot who follows strict regulations and standards gives me peace of mind. I wouldn’t feel that sense of security with a private jet pilot.
