How much gallons of gas does a private jet hold and how much is the price for the gas?

private jet
John P asked:

Also, how much would it cost for the jet to get from Georgia to Ohio?

    It depends what size it is. They hold anywhere from 3,000lbs to 400,000lbs. A Bombardier Challenger 605 holds 20,000lbs of jet fuel. It depends what state you live in, but the average price per gallon of jet fuel is $5.00. There is about 5 lbs per gallon, and the jet uses about 4 lbs per mile.

    jet fuel is not sold by the gallon, but by weight. it is also measured un weight when loaded on an aircraft, as it makes the weight and balance calculations easier. fuel burn is also calculated in lbs per hour. as for the weight of the fuel, it runs about 6lbs per gallon.

    the size and range of the aircraft determines how much fuel an aircraft carries. for instance the homebuilt maverick jet holds about 1000lbs of fuel, and a lear 31a holds about 8 times that amount.

    Private jet fuel IS sold by gallons (in the U.S., for sure). It is NOT sold in pounds. We, the pilots, convert from pounds to gallons and place our fuel order in gallons. Have done it many, many times. It weighs about 6.7 pounds per gallon and there is a pounds to gallons formula that is easy to remember and works well.
    The various jets I’ve flown carry a max of about 6,000 to about 12,000 pounds of fuel. The large cabin, intercontinental models can carry 20,000 pounds of fuel, or more. Very light jets can have a max fuel capacity of 1200 pounds or so.
    What’s pretty amazing for those of us came up through light piston aircraft, is that our fuel load alone (as in the 12,000 pounds of fuel mentioned above) weighs considerably more than the aircraft we used to fly. Yeah, it can take a while to put on 9,000 or 10,000 pounds of fuel.

    the term “private jet” is extremely vague. Private jets can range from small, single engine jet airplanes that may take around 25 gallons all the way up to the new Gulfstream 650 that can hold 6400 gallons

    I worked for several years at an FBO fueling airplanes. Our average upload (fuel up so to speak) was usually around 350 gallons. We had several news helicopters based at the airport that would take fuel 2-3 times a day at 40 gallons a time, and we would have Globals come in and take 4,000 gallons every now and then. That all goes into creating an average.

    I would say, taking out the extremes and getting right down to the true average, every day fuel load, most jets took on around 400 gallons. But keep in mind, they rarely top off. They want to have enough fuel for the flight, enough reserve fuel, and thats it. Anything else is dead weight.

    Fuel prices today are in the neighborhood of $5 per gallon, and that price is coming down slowly.

    Operational costs on a small jet, say a citation cj2 are around $3,500 per hour after after everything in taken into consideration. Fuel, lease rates, insurance, crew salaries, maintenance, storage, etc.

    Georgia to Ohio I would guess would be around 2 hours depending on the plane. so the costs would be around $7,000. Keep in mind that number can go sky high with larger, faster airplanes.

    A minor correction to the other posts. A private jet can range from an Eclipse 400 up to an Airbus A380. The answer to your question is from about 200 gallons up to about 20,000 gallons

    Airbus has sold two A380s to private individuals. One to an Arab sheik and one to a Nigerian businessman. Word is that the 300 million price tag is only the beginning, with the customized interiors they will cost one billion.

    Boeing has sold quite a few 787s, 777s, and 747s to private individuals to be used for weekend getaways.
