How does Al Gore offset the carbon footprint of his private jet?

private jet
Beautiful Dark Heart asked:

I read in Scientific American Mind that Al Gore has a private jet that he flies to various Eco-events, and that he offsets the carbon footprint. What does that mean?
Okay, now that you got that out of your systems, please give me a real answer. Thanx.

    bring on the carbon, he is actually doing the planet a favour. CARBON IS PLANT FOOD. atmospheric carbon is at the low end of historical levels right now. more carbon = more food. farmers that grow vegetables in greenhouse add carbon to the air inside to get huge production boosts.
